Finding a place to rent

You need a place, but where do you start looking?

It can take time to find a flat or house that meets your needs and budget. The tenancy website has good advice on where to start.

Check the market rent

It’s a good idea to check the market rent in the suburbs where you want to live.  Market rent is how much most people are paying for rental properties in each area.

Search online

Property for rent is often advertised on Trade Me and on the Real Estate website. Make sure you select To Rent or Rentals, then search by:

  • region
  • town
  • suburb
  • number of bedrooms
  • rent per week.

Many supermarkets have a noticeboard where you can put up a free notice. You might also be able to put a notice in the newsletters of clubs or churches you belong to.

There are several websites where you can list your requirements online for free (protect your account by making sure it’s a secure page whenever you sign in or register).
